Crochet Tech Editing

What does crochet tech editing entail?

As a crochet tech editor, I focus on the following aspects in a pattern:

  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling

  • Clarity (especially regarding the instructions)

  • Formatting and layout

  • Consistency and completeness (for example, regarding abbreviations used)

  • Numbers (stitch counts, conversions, measurements, gauge, sizing)

  • Charts and schematics

Please note that I do not provide pattern grading services (at least for now).

If you need help beyond the scope of this list, feel free to reach out anyway. I'm always open to discussing different ideas!

I specialise in patterns for garments, accessories and home goods, but am open to other projects.

Why get your pattern edited?

As crocheters, few things are more frustrating than diving into a new pattern we’re excited about only to find that it doesn’t work or the instructions are unclear. Confusion leads to frogging, disappointment and lost trust.

For designers, it’s not always easy to anticipate where readers might struggle. After spending hours, days or even months immersed in your pattern, it becomes hard to spot errors or see things from the crocheter’s perspective. And like any creative endeavour, pattern writing is vulnerable to human error.

That’s where a crochet tech editor comes in.

A tech editor is your behind-the-scenes collaborator, there to help you refine your pattern so it’s clear, consistent and enjoyable to follow. The goal isn’t to change your style, but rather to polish your pattern so your design can shine. Typos, inconsistencies, unclear phrasing, poor formatting and inaccuracies can all distract crocheters or even hinder them from completing your pattern, but tech editors can help tackle these issues.

Tech editing helps:

  • Save time and resources by catching issues before publication

  • Reduce post-launch questions and corrections

  • Make the experience smoother and more satisfying for both you and crocheters

  • Build trust and credibility with your audience and keep them coming back

  • Preserve your creative voice while polishing the technical details

  • Ensure clarity, accuracy and consistency

  • Refine tone and structure for better readability

I’m here to help you get your pattern ready so crocheters can bring your vision to life.

Why work with me?

For me, crochet has been a safe haven that allowed me to find balance in the midst of a very busy and stressful life. I picked it up as a hobby when I moved to London to work full-time as an editor. At the time, I had no friends or family around me, and no outlets for my creativity. Crochet was where I found an escape and, most importantly, community.

Today, I am a certified crochet tech editor, and my goal is to help designers and crocheters have that same positive experience.

Here are some of the things you can expect working with me:

  • Collaborative and flexible approach: I tailor my process and edits to fit my clients’ needs and preferences

    • Need to meet to discuss edits? I’m happy to walk through changes with you. Prefer a hands-off approach? I’ll deliver clean, polished work with minimal fuss

    • Have a style guide? I’ll follow it. Don’t have one? I’ll help standardize your content

    • I work across various formats (Word, Google Docs, PDF, etc.) and can adapt the way I make edits and leave comments depending on what suits you and your project

  • Experience with creators whose first language isn’t English: As a non-native speaker myself, I understand the struggle involved in translating ideas into a different language. I also have several years of experience editing work from individuals with varied levels of proficiency in English, so I know how to decode possible misinterpretations and efficiently refine your words, while preserving your message.

  • Expertise in US and UK English: I can edit writing in either variant depending on your audience or preference

My process

Step 1: Submit a query.

Start by filling out my contact form. This helps me understand your project and determine whether I’m the right editor to help. There’s no commitment at this stage—you’re not obligated to hire me, and I’m not obligated to take on the project.

Step 2: I’ll get back to you.

I aim to respond via email within 48 hours. From there, we can discuss the scope of your project, timelines, pricing and any preferences you may have. If needed, I’m happy to arrange a call to go over the details.

Step 3: Editing begins.

Once we’re set, I’ll begin working on your file(s). If anything is unclear, I’ll reach out for clarification. When the work is complete, I’ll return your edited file(s), along with any additional documents, such as an editorial report or style sheet, if applicable.

Step 4: Review and follow-up.

You’ll have time to review the edits, and we can go through any questions or feedback together.

Pricing

I offer crochet technical editing at a rate of €25 per hour, charged in 15-minute increments, with a minimum charge equivalent to one hour.

To provide an accurate quote and timeline, I require to see your pattern, either in its entirety, if possible, or a sample. This helps me assess complexity and editing needs. Please be assured that all patterns are treated with strict confidentiality.

Free 30-Minute Consultation

Every project includes the option for a free 30-minute call before the start of the project and after the initial edit. This call can be used to discuss your pattern, the edits made and any questions you may have. If more time is needed, additional consultation may be billed at my standard hourly rate.

Complimentary Final Edit

Once your pattern has been updated based on my feedback, I offer a free final pass, so your pattern is polished and ready to publish. If the project requires more than two rounds of editing, all but the final one will be charged at my standard rate.

Referral Discount

If you refer a new client who books a project, you’ll receive 20% off your next edit as a thank-you. This discount applies to one project and is non-transferable.
