Proofreading and Copyediting
Why get your work edited?
Even the most skilled writers benefit from a fresh perspective. Whether you're crafting a report, an article or your CV, editing helps ensure that your writing is clear, consistent and impactful.
We all make mistakes—from word choice and sentence structure to formatting and flow. After spending hours, days or even months immersed in your writing, it becomes hard to spot errors or see your work through your reader’s eyes. Typos, inconsistencies, unclear phrasing and poor formatting can all distract your audience, diluting your message and preventing you from reaching your goals.
That’s where your editor comes in.
A good editor doesn’t just correct mistakes—they collaborate with you to polish and strengthen your work. Editing helps:
Ensure clarity, accuracy and consistency
Refine tone and structure for better readability
Build trust and credibility with your audience
Save time and resources by getting it right the first time
Make the experience smoother for you and your readers
Whether you're preparing content for publication, sharing your ideas with clients or preparing to apply for a new job, editing is an investment in quality.
Proofreading vs. copyediting
Overall, you can distinguish five types of editing: developmental editing, structural editing, line editing, copyediting and proofreading.
With each one, editors focus on different issues, looking at varying levels of detail—from the whole picture to each individual word.
In practice, the lines between these are often blurred, so typically you do not need to go through all five types of editing individually. Shorter pieces of writing often only require copyediting and/or proofreading.
Proofreading
Proofreading is the final step before publication, so the goal is to check for any errors that may still be lingering in the file and make sure that the final product looks clean and polished.
Proofreaders check:
Grammar, spelling and punctuation
Formatting
Layout
Other possible oversights (e.g., lingering inconsistencies or factual errors)
Copyediting
The aim when copyediting is to improve the quality and clarity of the writing, ensuring that the text has the right tone and style, and reflects the author’s voice.
Generally, copyeditors check:
Grammar, spelling and punctuation
Structure and flow
Wording (clear, polished and non-problematic)
Consistency
Tone and style
Factuality and accuracy
Possible legal liability issues (e.g., copyright infringement)

Why work with me?
Editing isn’t just about catching typos and adding commas; it’s about helping you communicate clearly, confidently and effectively.
Here are some of the things you can expect working with me:
Expertise in US and UK English: I can edit writing in either variant depending on your audience or preference
Experience with authors whose first language isn’t English: As a non-native speaker myself, I understand the struggle involved in translating ideas into a different language. I also have several years of experience editing work from individuals with varied levels of proficiency in English, so I know how to decode possible misinterpretations and efficiently refine your words, while preserving your message
Confidence in editing technical writing: I have a background in science and years of experience writing and editing technical content across areas like biomedicine and tech, so I understand the demands of technical communication and the importance of clarity. I’m confident diving into technical/specialised materials
Ability to translate complex ideas into accessible concepts: Whether you're writing for specialists or the general public, I can help adjust your language to achieve the right balance between precision and readability
Collaborative and flexible approach: I tailor my process and edits to fit my clients’ needs and preferences
Need a proofread, a copyedit or a hybrid of both? I can go as in-depth as your project requires
Need to meet to discuss edits? I’m happy to walk through changes with you. Prefer a hands-off approach? I’ll deliver clean, polished work with minimal fuss
Have a style guide? I’ll follow it. Don’t have one? I’ll help standardise your content
I work across various formats (Word, PowerPoint, Google Docs, PDF, etc.) and can adapt the way I make edits and leave comments (tracked changes, in-document comments, direct changes, separate report and style guide, etc.) depending on what suits you and your project
My process
Step 1: Submit a query.
Start by filling out my contact form. This helps me understand your project and determine whether I’m the right editor to help. There’s no commitment at this stage—you’re not obligated to hire me, and I’m not obligated to take on the project.
Step 2: I’ll get back to you.
I aim to respond via email within 48 hours. From there, we can discuss the scope of your project, timelines, pricing and any preferences you may have. If needed, I’m happy to arrange a call to go over the details.
Step 3: Editing begins.
Once we’re set, I’ll begin working on your file(s). If anything is unclear, I’ll reach out for clarification. When the work is complete, I’ll return your edited file(s), along with any additional documents, such as an editorial report or style sheet, if applicable.
Step 4: Review and follow up.
You’ll have time to review the edits, and we can go through any questions or feedback together.
Pricing
I offer proofreading services at a rate of €25 per hour and copyediting at €30 per hour. These are charged in 15-minute increments, with a minimum charge equivalent to one hour.
To provide an accurate quote and timeline, I may require to see a sample of the project. This helps me assess complexity and editing needs. Please be assured that all documents shared with me are treated with strict confidentiality.
